No surprises in yesterday's Ice Hockey World Championship. The big favourites kept the leading positions as Russia won over Slovakia 3:1 and the Czech Rep. 6:2 against the French.

Group D

USA – Denmark

Nobody would expect Denmark to come here as favourites. However they managed to get three points against Finland whilst the USA suffered a shocking overtime loss to Germany in the opening match. It is clear we have already seen a few surprises here and we might see a lot more over the next few days. Group D is looking extremly open at the moment and so the USA desperately need three points in this match seeing that they will face a strong Finland in the final match.

Denmark have proved to be a dangerous side and if they are able to show again the sort of performance they showed against Finland then they can take something from here too. Frans Nielsen who scored two goals against Finland should lead the attack while Andersen who saved 37/38 shots in the first game is the man to count on in the net. It seems the underdogs have gathered momentum and anything can happen tonight. But USA's young team is not expected to lose two straight games although this match could be even harder than the one to Germany.
Pick:

Group B

Switzerland – Italy

The Swiss team were the favourites against Latvia but their last goal to 3:1 came to the empty net just a few seconds before the final whistle. Another win today would grant them a top 12 ticket. It should not be a problem however as Italy played the role of outsiders well when they lost to Canada 5:1. But with all respect five goals from Canada is considered to be a successful result. Italy are hot relegation candidates and therefore should suffer their second defeat today. Switzerland count on disciplined play and with the great Gerber in the net that should be enough to get a win here.

Pick:

  • Switzerland to score over 3.5 @ 1.85 at bwin.com
  • Switzerland -2.5 @ 1.85 at bwin.com

Group D

Germany – Finland

After a game between the hosts Germany and the USA in front of an audience of over 76 000, we might as well look at the other game in this group. Group D is the one that produced two surprising results – Germany defeated the USA 2:1 and Denmark beat Finland 3-1. Today’s match will be definitely the most interesting in Monday’s schedule. With Denmark right behind the hosts in the World Rankings, this tournament on home ice is a big chance to make a climb back up the rankings. But there are only a few players with higher quality in their offense: Marcel Muller, Patrik Wolf (the top scorers of the DEL) and Marcel Goc (the forward from Nashville Predators). On the other hand, Finland are focusing on breaking in some younger players like forward Oskar Osala and defenseman Sami Vatanen. Despite the loss in their opening game, they are still the favourites of Group D because they have plenty of past World Championship experience. Finland will be under pressure but I think they will win

Pick:

  • Over 4,5 goals @ 1.36 at bwin.com
  • Germany will score more than 1,5 goals @ 1.85 at bwin.com
  • Handicap (the regular time) – Finland -1,5 @ 1.80 at bet365.com

Group B

Latvia – Canada

The Latvians face Canada on Monday in their second group game. They will count on the experienced goaltender Edgar Masalskis. If he has a good day, it is a really hard task to score goals against Latvia. The Baltic land is a stable member of the tournament. Their players have good technical skills but it will be a big surprise if they get some points today. Latvia  were defeated 3-1 by Switzerland two days ago. Their opponent, Canada, beat Italy 5-1without any serious problems. Perry, Russel, Duchene, Stamkos and Bourque all scored a goal each. Chris Mason was the goaltender at the start and he stopped 23 from 24 shots. Canada have come to Germany with a strong team including stars from the NHL such as Smyth, Stamkos, Perry, Whitney and Burns. We can expect another Canadian victory.
Pick:

  • Handicap (the regular time) – Canada -3,5 @ 1.95 at  bet365.com
  • Over 5,5 goals @ 1.62 at bwin.com
  • The first goal of the game – 00:01 – 08:59 min @ 1.60 at bwin.com
